US COVID-19 Data Resources

Last Updated: February 26, 2021

As I announced in my Feb 26, 2021 blog post, covid19-projections.com will be ending its daily updates on March 7, 2021. Below is a list of resources related to COVID-19 data and modeling that I have found useful over the past year. This is all specific to the US. If you have any recommendations that you think would be a good addition to this list, please let me know.

Cases, Testing, Hospitalizations, Deaths

The COVID Tracking Project was my preferred all-in-one source for state and national level data on cases, testing, hospitalizations, and deaths. Johns Hopkins CSSE is also a great source with case and death data on a national, state & county level. Due to the shutdown of the project in March 2021, the COVID Tracking Project provided some alternatives where users can find data regarding cases, testing, hospitalizations, and deaths in the US.

Models for cases and deaths

Click here to see a list of recommended models for the forecasting of cases and deaths.

California has an excellent dashboard for nowcasting and forecasting models. In my opinion, it is a great example of a dashboard done right.

Infections

We recommend the following two sites for real time infection estimates: CEID/UGA Nowcast (US & state level) and covidestim.org (state & county level). We caution that some of the estimates may differ significantly from covid19-projections.com.

The CDC released estimates of true infections in December 2020, but I discussed the limitations of their study. They’ve since revised their estimates in January.

Vaccinations

While I cannot locate any regularly-updated projections for vaccinations, the CDC has done a great job of expanding its Vaccination Data Tracker to include as much data as possible. They now have daily-updated time series data, data regarding Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities, as well as breakdowns by demographics. As of late February 2021, I found this Bloomberg and ProPublica piece on vaccine supply to be the most up-to-date and comprehensive.

For vaccine trackers, Bloomberg is my go-to for US progress and Our World in Data is my go-to for global progress.
